The Pew
There was an old church pew sitting in the back of grandma’s shed
Years of dust had it covered up, made it easy to forget
So I dug it out went to work, cleaned it up real good
Got to thinking about the life of this old piece of wood
It had its share of scars scratched in the grain for all to see
Had a piece of some kids bubble gum stuck underneath the seat
But every flaw that showed was living proof of a job done well
And I know theres a million stories this old pew could tell
How it’s bared the weight of troubled souls gave rest to those with heavy loads
And felt the tears of both joy and pain
It’s held families while they prayed rejoiced with those when souls were saved
Even witnessed a miracle or two
It’s more than just a piece of wood
This old pew
So I set a while thinking about all that’s taken place
And how many times this knotty pine has heard Amazing Grace
And all the nervous hands and sweaty palms that have held it tight
As the Lord forgave their sins and changed their lives
Theres been sleepy children all curled up, hymnals and communion cups
Placed in the trust of this old wooden bench
I wish I could go back in time see it in its glory in its prime
As it did the job that God gave it to do
It’s more than just a piece of wood
This old pew
It’s bared the weight of troubled souls gave rest to those with heavy load
And felt he tears of both joy and pain
It’s held families while they prayed rejoiced with those when souls were saved
Even witnessed a miracle or two
It’s more than just a piece of wood
This old pew
